Estate Sales 101

How to have a successful estate sale:

1. So you want to have an estate sale?
Holding an estate sale requires much more planning than a garage sale.  If you have a large estate, you will want to hire an estate sale company. The goal of the estate sale company is to make the most money possible from the sale of your belongings and to liquidate unneeded items from your home. Take a moment to interview the company, you want someone who is trustworthy, professional and knowledgeable.

2. Keep it or throw it out?
KEEP!! It is important for you to realize that buyers buy EVERYTHING, from apparel to zappers! Remember that you or your family bought all these items and someone else will too. Throwing anything away is like throwing away money and that is not our goal.

3. Purpose of a professional estate sale company:
We will walk you through the entire process at the beginning of our first meeting. We will help you plan the dates and duration for the sale which is usually three or four day over a weekend. We will advertise the sale, research and prepare all items for sale, put up signs, and stage your home so it brings out the best in the possessions you will be selling
.

We take a significant amount of time and effort prior to the sale to prepare for your big event. We will nicely stage your items to optimize sale proceeds. We will price most every item for sale, based on knowledge and research. We will explain our plan for discounting items as the sale progresses. We will also report to you at the close of each day in order to update you on our progress and amount of money collected. At the end of the sale we will account for all proceeds per the contract.

4. Should I stay or go?
GO!! Leave during the set up and during the sale. It can be emotional and difficult watching family heirlooms and belongings leaving your home with strangers. Buyers have no emotional relationship to you, your relatives or your personal belongings. Their reactions or questions may seem rude, even disrespectful to you. You may think you would "be ok with it" but trust me, you won't.

5. In the aftermath
Along with making you the most money for your belongings, our second goal is to make this as pleasant an experience as possible. In the end, we want you to be happy with the work we did.
